Lab 2 Posted to WebCT

Finally.

Good News!

Our (CoE) Echo folks have been working overtime and have had some luck in reextracting at least some of the older videos. Once those have been processed, I’ll go back and update the original entries to point to the correct URLs or mark them as “lost.”

Midterm Grades

Several students in this class were required to have midterm grades reported. Because there’s not a lot to calculate from at this point in this class, the midterm grade reported was an approximation based on your performance on the objective part of the midterm exam and your score on lab 1. Lab 1 scores are posted in WebCT. The midterm exam score will be posted late next week after grading is completed for both parts.

Echo Server Failure (Updated ThursdayAfternoon)

Thursday Afternoon about 4 PM.

There is good news…and bad news… In keeping with my normal philosophy, here’s the bad news first:

Because even the hard drives had to be eventually replaced on the server (along with virtually every other component it seems), the videos that were published before the failure are currently lost. Our (CoE, not OIT) people are working to see if they can find a way to recover the older videos, but it may not be possible. Please keep your fingers crossed.

Now for the good news:

The server is back up and functioning now. Videos captured since the failure will be available after all of the processing is completed. This will take a while, as there’s a backlog of several days’ videos. Please be patient.

Wednesday Evening about 9PM

The server hardware has been repaired. The Echo software is being reinstalled, so expect (he said hopefully) the server to be available on Thursday morning sometime.

Wednesday Afternoon:

I have a query in to see what progress is (isn’t?) being made. I will post another update when I get a response.

Monday Noon:

The server is still down, awaiting repair parts delivery from Dell. The latest estimate for a return to service is very late on Tuesday.

Sunday Afternoon:

The latest word is that the server should be back up sometime on Monday. Because of this extended down time, I am extending the lab time for 3 additional days, making in now due on Thursday evening. Even if the server does not come back up, this is the only extension that will be given. (This is the primary reason that the syllabus states that the availablity of videos is not guaranteed.)

Original entry:

The machine that handles all the videos died sometime yesterday, so videos cannot currently be viewed. The latest word I have is that it _may_ be back up sometime this afternoon.

MidTerm Exam

For those who have not yet heard, the midterm exam is scheduled for next Wednesday, 3 March. Please bring the following items:

Pens/pencils
18F452 datasheet. (Sorry, you’ll need to print it, or at least the portions you think you’ll need. You may make notes in the datasheet, so long as the notes only have to do with the data in the datasheet itself — no crib notes for the rest of the exam.)

This will be a 75 minute exam. Types of questions included: multiple choice, T/F, fill in the blank, short answer, discussion, matching and problems.

Grades will be posted to WebCT no later than 11:55PM on 10 March. Graded exams will be returned no later than class on 10 March.

Grading Standards

The standard in this course is that assignments shall be graded and the grades posted to WebCT within 7 calendar days after the WebCT “cutoff date” (late due date) . If you do not have a grade 8 days after the cutoff, please harass your TA. If you do not have it within 9 days, please send me an email.

You should also receive (after your grade is posted) a hardcopy of the grading rubric that was filled out when your lab was graded.

Grading for exams is similar. Grades will be posted to WebCT within 7 calendar days, with the exams being returned the next class after that time.
