“I’m going to need a new pair of shoes for college.”

I feel like I should start off with something about the Office. Anyone that saw last week’s episode will probably agree with me in saying that it seems like NBC is starting to wrap up this wonderful TV show. The new episode was basically all about flashbacks to previous episodes and seasons. This is the end, folks!

Today I gave a campus tour to about 6 Junior guys and 2 Junior girls. Ohhh, high school. I heard, “Man, this place is so much bigger than high school” and “I’m going to need a new pair of shoes for college…this is a lot of walking.” They asked me a question that 1. I had no idea what the answer was and 2. I had never even thought about before.

“Can we bring golf carts to college?”

Hmm. I actually have no idea. You can chain it up like a bike and it’ll get you to classes pretty quickly. But I’m sure a lot of people could get hurt. That would be interesting. For some reason, I can hear my Astronomy professor’s voice in my head yelling, “Don’t take that golf cart down this corridor!” He graduated from Oxford University. So he’s a really funny old man with an English accent. I can tell he’s going to be one of my favorites. As well as my French professor for this semester. She’s awesome. I want to BE her. I’ve already learned a lot from her and it’s only the 2nd week of class! Elle est très magnifique!

One of the things I love about UT Arlington is all of the study abroad opportunites we have. I’ve already gone over to the Swift Center to talk to a study abroad advisor! Hopefully, if all goes according to plan, I’ll be in Leicester, England in the Spring of 2012. If my student visa will allow me, I want to be able to stay with someone for part of the summer and see some of the London Summer Olympics! How awesome would that be? Yeah. I have a plan. There are a lotttt of scholarships available for Mavericks to study abroad, so I may not even have to pay that much. I have my passport, so I’m halfway there…basically…

I’m definitely really excited about our new tour! The launch date has changed to February 8th, so that a few more tweaks can be made to the layout of the tour. We’ll get on the Mav Mover (our bus that goes around campus) and go into Connections Cafe for some ice cream! Yay!

UTA and Tough Love 2 – A Match Made in Heaven

As I was home over the holiday break, I was watching one of my guiltiest pleasures – Tough Love 2 on VH1. I know, I know – it’s a ridiculous reality show based yet again on people’s inability to find love or maintain a working relationship and believe that broadcasting that to the world (and having their personal conflicts produced and edited) is the way to conquer those problems. But I still love Tough Love… and Jersey Shore. So there.

As Tough Love entered into a commercial break, I heard a familiar sound. A sound that I often hear during the Monday through Friday workweek but typically doesn’t follow me home for my evenings or on the weekend. It was the sound of the beginning of our new UT Arlington commercial. Once the opening jingle gets stuck in your head, you really can’t escape it’s catchiness. Especially when the guy is yelling “Go!” in the background.

So, there it was – my two worlds collided. My at-work, professional, UTA-loving self, and my at-home, reality tv junkie, just-leave-me-alone-to-sit-on-this-couch self. At first, I was confused – why would UTA do this to me?! Haunt me at home about work, make me think about my laundry list of things to do back at the office while I’m trying to enjoy the final moments of my show and see who gets put in the hot seat by Steve (Jenna – you totally had it coming)? My attention is supposed to be focused elsewhere! But then, I got really excited. How cool is it to see the University that I love and work for on TV? How many other universities do you see commercials for on TV? It was a surreal but cool moment. I even texted my boss – I’m sort of lame like that.

If you haven’t seen the commercial yet, here it is: UT Arlington – Unbranded!

After stalking other channels for a few days to see where else it might pop up, I spotted it on Nickelodeon too – has anybody else seen it too?

Ok – back to work! MavElite students are back on campus and sulking working in Davis Hall! More blog posts to come soon from them. Don’t forget – we give campus tours every Monday through Friday at 9AM, 10AM, 1PM and 2PM. The campus tour is changing starting on February 1st, so there will be more to see and do on the new tour – and, you might get a free scoop of Blue Bell ice cream… Just sayin’. Visit us online to register for a tour: www.uta.edu/admissions/visit.

See you around campus!
