“I’m going to need a new pair of shoes for college.”

I feel like I should start off with something about the Office. Anyone that saw last week’s episode will probably agree with me in saying that it seems like NBC is starting to wrap up this wonderful TV show. The new episode was basically all about flashbacks to previous episodes and seasons. This is the end, folks!

Today I gave a campus tour to about 6 Junior guys and 2 Junior girls. Ohhh, high school. I heard, “Man, this place is so much bigger than high school” and “I’m going to need a new pair of shoes for college…this is a lot of walking.” They asked me a question that 1. I had no idea what the answer was and 2. I had never even thought about before.

“Can we bring golf carts to college?”

Hmm. I actually have no idea. You can chain it up like a bike and it’ll get you to classes pretty quickly. But I’m sure a lot of people could get hurt. That would be interesting. For some reason, I can hear my Astronomy professor’s voice in my head yelling, “Don’t take that golf cart down this corridor!” He graduated from Oxford University. So he’s a really funny old man with an English accent. I can tell he’s going to be one of my favorites. As well as my French professor for this semester. She’s awesome. I want to BE her. I’ve already learned a lot from her and it’s only the 2nd week of class! Elle est très magnifique!

One of the things I love about UT Arlington is all of the study abroad opportunites we have. I’ve already gone over to the Swift Center to talk to a study abroad advisor! Hopefully, if all goes according to plan, I’ll be in Leicester, England in the Spring of 2012. If my student visa will allow me, I want to be able to stay with someone for part of the summer and see some of the London Summer Olympics! How awesome would that be? Yeah. I have a plan. There are a lotttt of scholarships available for Mavericks to study abroad, so I may not even have to pay that much. I have my passport, so I’m halfway there…basically…

I’m definitely really excited about our new tour! The launch date has changed to February 8th, so that a few more tweaks can be made to the layout of the tour. We’ll get on the Mav Mover (our bus that goes around campus) and go into Connections Cafe for some ice cream! Yay!

My Star Wars name is Cairh Josul.

I just took a quiz that told my Star Wars name. Neato.

I really like how the cover of our campus newspaper, The Shorthorn, says, “Mild winter weather expected”. Oh, really? Mild? It’s FA-REEZING. I’m dreaming of Mild. Because of El Nino, it’s supposed to get warmer. Yay for that! I opened up the newspaper about 3 minutes ago and a special little piece of paper fell out. A coupon…to the bookstore. That’s right! Definitely something to hold onto. The last time a coupon fell out of The Shorthorn, my best friend, Alex, used it as wrapping paper for our office Christmas party.

The madness happened yesterday afternoon here in Davis Hall. MavElite and White Elephant are like Marco and Polo…Peas and Pods…Meat and Potatoes…Jim and Pam…special. There was an “Edward Scissorhands” DVD and a scarf being stolen like crazy. Then…there was a manicure set. I won’t say what the gender is of the young gentleman person that fought for it…but it was very good.

“Very good” is my new favorite phrase. My room mate and I were filling out an evaluation for our PolySci class and we laughed at how some of the options to describe how our professor taught was “Excellent” and “Good”…then there was “Very good”. Does anyone ever say that? Unless describing a meal? “Hey, let’s go to a movie tonight!” “Very good!” Umm..no. So yes…it’s my new favorite phrase. I’m bringing it back…like Justin.

Today was the last day of classes. I’ll really miss my FIG class. That’s one of the classes I shared with my closest friends and I LOVE my teacher, or student PAL as he’s officially known. Oh, well! Next semester brings new adventures…and professors.

Gimme a Break.

Hey all!

My name is Caitlyn and I’m a Public Relations/French freshman here at UT Arlington! I’m so excited to be able to blog on this fancy thing. I’m from Van Alstyne, Texas…yes..I know…you’ve never heard of it. I graduated this past year from Van Alstyne High School and now I’m a Maverick! And I absolutely love it! Why, you ask? If you’re looking for a school where nobody hangs out together and everyone is completely unproductive all the time…go somewhere else. Here at UT Arlington, there’s always something going on around campus. When you get to college, study groups become the best part of your week. My history study groups tend to last about  4 hours…and only 2 of those are productive. But, I leave those groups feeling confident and ready for an exam. One way to transition into college life, if reading this awesome blog doesn’t help…join a FIG.

FIGs are Freshman Interest Groups where typically 20 students have class together once or twice a week to learn about study skills, test taking strategies, why we aren’t sleeping, why we’re gaining weight (freshman 15 is a real thing…beware) and other important things. These FIG classes are taught by upper level UTA students who usually share your major. Example: In the Liberal Arts FIG, our teacher is (the best) International Business-French Junior. Yes, he’s a business major, but he’s also in French. So he relates to the Liberal Arts students in that way.

So,  one of the things that has gotten me through college is textbooks the TV show “The Office”. Most people I know have a subscription to Netflix, which is definitely an A+ idea. I basically watch an episode every single day. But hey-each student needs a way to get their mind off of class and studying and just have a “You Moment”. I probably have little “Caitlyn Moments” more often than studying, but oh well. Anyways-I’ve had the “Gimme a break, gimme a break…” theme song stuck in my head for about a week now. There’s an episode of The Office where one of the characters, Andy, starts singing that song, but can’t remember the vital “Kit-Kat bar” part of it. He throws out things such as “Chrysler car” and “Fancy feast”…and my personal favorite: “football cream”. Why I just added that onto my blog post…I have no idea. Like I said…it’s been stuck in my head.

I guess it’s time to ignore the calls of Netflix and crack open a book or two. Finals are almost here!

My first one is this Saturday. I know…Saturday?

Thanks for reading! If you come visit UTA, I’d love to say HI! And I’ll probably throw in a high-five…or two.

Caitlyn!
