Maverick Lens Help Logo

Do I have to be a student?
No. The Maverick Lens is open to all undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at UT-Arlington as well as faculty and staff employed by the university.

How do I submit a photograph?
Photos are submitted through our Flickr group. See HERE for an example submission. Full submission guidelines can be found at Submission Guidelines PDF.

How many photos can I submit?
You may submit up to 5 images for consideration. Your photograph must have been taken in the last 5 years and must not have been exhibited before.

Can it okay to submit photos with people in them?
Photography is allowed and legal on public property. The exception to this is places where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy such as dressing rooms, restrooms, medical facilities, or inside a private residence. If the person will be the main subject of the photo it is usually advisable to get their permission, as some people may not want to be photographed.

Can I submit someone else’s photo?
No. The photograph you submit must be your own original work. Photo manipulations of other people’s work, or stock photos, are also not acceptable.

I took a photo with my cell phone, can I submit that?
No. The resolution of cell phones is not high enough to produce a good quality print. For more information about resolution see “Image Resolution And Print Quality” and “What Camera Resolution Do I Need?”

What is an Artist’s Statement?
An Artist’s Statement is where you as the photographer get to explain your choice of subject matter, your artistic vision, influences, process, etc. It is your chance to say what you want about your photograph and yourself as an artist.

Where can I get a print made of my image?
Local print shops such as Bird’s Copies can provide prints. Online companies such as Shutterfly will also print photographs. The maximum image size that we will accept is 16″x10″.

Where can I get a mat for my photograph?
Craft stores such as Hobby Lobby and Michaels have mats. There are many companies online that will also do custom cut matting. The outside dimensions of your mat must be 20″x14″.
Print Size Requirements

What will be done with my photograph when the exhibit is over?
Photographs that did not receive a Juror Award or an Honorable Mention will be available for pickup once the exhibit is over. Award winning photographs will be gifted to the Library and stored in the Library’s Special Collections as part of the UT Arlington Library Photograph Exhibition Collection.

Can I sell my photograph?
Sales of the non-award winning photographs are permitted. The University of Texas-Arlington Library will not oversee sales transactions. The artist must indicated if a work is for sale. If it is the artist’s e-mail will be included on the label. It will be left up to the buyer and artist to make arrangements to carry out the transaction. Artwork may not be taken off display before the end of the exhibition.

I like to manipulate my photographs with photoshop. They tend to look more like paintings when they are finished. Are you accepting this type of work?

    Donald,
As long as your work conforms to what stated in the submission guidelines you may submit it. The only stipulation regarding digitally edited works is that they “…must be the photographer’s own original work. Photo manipulations of other people’s work, or stock photos, are not acceptable.”
