TexPREP is the summer program we have here at Texas Wesleyan University for 7th – 10th grade students interested in and underrepresented in math/science/engineering. The dates are June 8 –July 28.

This summer Sustainability is one issue that all the students will be learning about. I am looking for resources for our students. I was wondering if any of the books that you will be using in your summer reading program would be applicable for the TexPREP students. Also, do you have suggestions for other resources and activities.

Thanks Judah. I’m glad you posted a balancing perspective. I took part in this analysis, and had fun working on it. My perspective on the issue is different: global warming/ climate change does not necessarily have to be proven scientifically in order to begin and continue doing activities that are sustainable, create justice and happiness in our society, good health for all species, and a balanced ecosphere. While mocking climate science as quackery is foolish, it is also unjustifiable to feed the societal systems (e.g.: the corporate-government monster that is slowly sucking America’s life..) that create socio-environmental injustice, “unsustainability”, and sickness for all humans, and for the entire planet. It is necessary to not obviate the carbon debate, but also necessary to not get caught up in it, resorting to inviable “solutions” like carbon credits, geo-engineering, and biogenetic climate adaptation. Seeking and establishing the balance between the extremes would be the most necessary work for the environmentalists of our generation.

I’m needing clean styrofoam dishes, egg cartons, etc. I’m building a model house out of the building blocks http://wwww.recycledplasticblockhouses.com

I can get free recyclable plastic from the recycling centers. But what I want to use is the stuff that isn’t usually accepted by curbside recycling.

I’m also looking for film plastics (grocery bags)

So if you have some of that stuff around and it is clean (the public will be handling this making blocks) I will arrange picking it up. I need about three hundred large garbage bags worth.

So yeah, I agree with Erica,

I’m a music major in a school that has 300+ other music students…. Here is my question… WHY DON’T WE HAVE MORE THAN 15 PRACTICE ROOMS?????

I am often very sick of going up to the music building and not having a place to practice. And if I practice in my ON CAMPUS apartment I get complaints…. THIS IS A PROBLEM…. PRACTICING IS MY HOMEWORK

Also, UTA’s new smoking ban coming in August?

I would just like to ask, why are we building parking garages and taking away spots from students when we COULD be using that money for other important things? Such as new landscaping (that’d be more green) or oh I don’t know NEW EQUIPMENT FOR THE CHEM LABS. I don’t know if anyone in SC is a chem major, but the balances and other equipment is old and worn out and not accurate OR precise.

I find that UTA’s spending spree is reckless and stupid, especially since I just read out budget cuts.

QUIT BUILDING PUBLIC GARAGES AND ALLOCATE THAT MONEY FOR THE STUDENTS WHO PAY TO BE HERE.
