October UTAAA Luncheon Recap

October 5, 2012 – 10:10 am

The October UTAAA meeting that took place yesterday was very thought provoking.

The meeting started with basic announcements:

For those of you that may be new to advising, signing up for MARK (Maverick Advisors Reaching for Knowledge) Training is a great way to learn about UTA policies and advising practices. Click here for more details and registration.

The UTAAA Conference has been scheduled for Monday, February 11, 2013. The conference title is “Advising Tune-Up: Becoming Mechanics for Student Success.” Proposals for break-out sessions will be accepted between October 15th and November 15th. Please refer to the UTAAA website for more information.

The focus of the luncheon was the UTA Undergraduate Recruitment Department, and they offered a great presentation about their staff, mission and goals. Did you know that their office has over 70 employees and the BeAMaverick@uta.edu account received over 23,000 emails last year? Wow! Needless to say, the statistics that they presented about new freshman and transfer students were phenomenal. They also shared the President’s goal of 3000 new freshman for 2013-2014. The session was jammed packed with information, and we learned about their communication flows, recruitment process and community outreach efforts. Remember to mark your calendars for the next UTAAA Luncheon on Thursday, November 1, 2012 in the Library Atrium for a presentation from Student Affairs.

AND…a quick plug for The Maverick Major Fair . Join us or send your exploratory students to the Library Mall on Wednesday, October 11, 2012, 10am-2pm. Hosted by the University College and University Advising Center, the Maverick Major Fair will offer students an opportunity to meet with department advisors before the big, spring advising rush. October Luncheon Next Week

Just a reminder that next week Undergraduate Recruitment will attend the October UTAAA Luncheon to give us all some updates and information from their office. The luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, October 4, 2012 in the Game Room on the 2nd floor of the MAC. We look forward to seeing you next week and adding some volunteers for the 16th Annual UTAAA Conference.

September Meeting Recap

Today’s UTAAA meeting was a great success. Several representatives discussed new programs, events and resources for our students.

Presenters included:

Sebastian Fuentes from the Office of Graduate Studies gave attendees information about the upcoming Grad Fest. Grad Fest 2012 will be held October 17, 2012 and more information can be found online.

Schnavia Smith Hatcher, PhD from the new Center for African American Studies discussed the mission of the center. She stated that community outreach, social justice advocacy and life enhancing transformations are part of the goals for the center. For more information, Dr. Hatcher can be reached at shatcher@uta.edu. The Center for African American Studies is currently located in the Social Work Complex, Building B, Room 115.

Matt Hendricks, University College Director of Programming and Marketing, described the Success Series as a series of workshops designed to improve academic performance and enhance important life skills. The Success Series has three specialized tracks; FIRST-to help first generation students , ADVANCE-for sophomores, and FINISH for transfer students. Faculty, Staff and Students can find out about upcoming Success Series workshops here.

Elisabeth Cawthorn, PhD, is the Director of the new Pre-Law Center at UTA. The Center does not currently have a physical address, but utilizes their website to reach out to the UTA community. The Pre-Law Center offers help and guidance for any UTA student interested in pursuing a law degree or a career in law. For more information visit www.uta.edu/prelaw.

UTAAA Luncheon Reminder

The first UTAAA lunch of the 2012-2013 academic year is set for Thursday, Sept. 6 in the Library Atrium. The topic is “Highlighting New (or Underutilized) Student Resources. UTAAA will host representatives from the Graduate School, the new Pre-Law Center, the new Center of African American Studies and University College Programming. As always, lunch will be available at 12:30pm.

October Brown Bag Lunch

The September Brown Bag lunch was a success. The topic about distance advising brought on a great conversation for those who attended.

Donald Asher is a nationally known speaker and writer on the topics of careers and higher education. Some of his topics include choosing a major, on-boarding and retention issues, career re-entry and repair, and networking.

Brown Bag Lunch

UTAAA will be hosting the first of many Brown Bag Lunches on Monday, September 27th from 12:00-1:00pm, located in the large conference room, 3rd floor of Ransom Hall.

Meeting to discuss UTAAA bylaws
