ESPM!!! no— not ESPN, but ESPM

Talk about initialisms – it is confusing!   I am talking about Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management, not the latest sports news.
The database provides coverage to abstracts and much full-text back to 1967.

It is a great database for a wide variety of researchers: environmental engineers, civil engineers, chemists, ecologists, toxicologists, health & safety specialists, and the list goes on.
Rather than re-invent the wheel, I will “borrow” the description of ESPM from our A-Z list of databases.

ESPM is a “Multidisciplinary database that provides abstracts and references to literature covering all issues of air, land, water, and noise pollution as well as bacteriology, ecology, toxicology, risk assessment, environmental engineering, environmental biotechnology, waste management, and water resources.”

If you are looking for environmental impact statements or reports from the EPA, etc., this is the database to go to.    There is even a direct link to RefWorks – an online bibliographic management tool for managing your research citations.

FocusDay for Geographic Information Systems

Though I personally have not & don’t plan to read the series of books called “Twilight”, a workshop in the afternoon of this day will use the books as a source of data. And I don’t believe in vampires.

“Spatial analysis and vampires are topics covered during GIS Day Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the sixth floor parlor of the Central Library. The programs on global information systems are part of the National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week, Nov. 15-21.

A GIS Research Showcase features how the geographic information system is used around campus. The showcase is set for 11 a.m.-noon and 1-2:30 p.m.

Darren Hayunga, an assistant professor in finance and real estate, will explain GIS use for spatial statistics, spatial econometrics and statistics in research. His talk begins at noon.

Josh Been, GIS librarian, leads the whimsical, hands-on workshop “Vampires in North America: Map Settlements and Migration Patterns” from 3-5 p.m. in B-20/21 of the Central Library. The workshop uses the “Twilight” books for data.

Participants can play games, win prizes and partake of the giant GIS Day cake.

GIS Day is free and open to the public. Register to attend.”

DSPACE – What’s That? It’s the ResearchCommons!!

The UT Arlington Library has established the ResearchCommons, a new repository to house electronic versions of important University research, including papers, books, images, recordings and other data. UT Arlington is one of 18 Texas universities that have established stable and secure digital environments in which scholars may deposit their completed work.

So far, the new communities in the ResearchCommons include the Department of Linguistics and TESOL, Department of Psychology, Department of Mathematics, School of Architecture and the Library.

Visit dspace.uta.edu to access the ResearchCommons, which is available to the public.

Actually, reading the next post about Scholarly Communication will help you understand the importance of the ResearchCommons.

Open Access & Scholarly Communication

What is scholarly communication?   Well, (and that is a “mighty deep subject”)  it sounds like intellectual jargon.  Actually, I feel I’m getting in over my head with this blog post.  Instead of re-inventing the wheel, I will “borrow” a definition from a colleague here at University of Texas/Arlington Library to explain what Scholarly Communication is.
“Scholarly communication is the system through which research and other scholarly writings are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to the scholarly community, and preserved for future use.”

If you want to read more about scholarly communication or are very interested in the topic, click on this link http://libguides.uta.edu/scholcomm
The guide was created by UT-Arlington Library staff to help all of us learn about scholarly communication.
