Travelin’ Soldier

I choose the Travelin Soldier by the Dixie Chicks because it is a beautiful song about a soldier in the Vietnam War. The song not only gives you the point of view of the soldier but also the loved ones left behind. “2 days past eighteen, he was waiting for the bus in his army greens.” The first line of the song shows us how young the soldiers going to war were. The average age of the soldiers in Vietnam was nineteen. The song also shows how important communication between soldiers and people in the states was. This soldier asks a young lady who he didn’t know if he could write to her. The young lady was clearly encouraged not to continue waiting for him because a lot of soldiers did not make it home. The most powerful part of this song in my opinion is when the list of local Vietnam dead was read at the football game. I think this captures a very sad part of war. Even during a fun event, there is always death looming. War interrupts everyone’s life in one way or another.
