Dschinghis Khan is a German pop band originally formed in 1979 to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest. The group’s name was taken from the title of their song, “Dschinghis Khan”, which was written and produced by Ralph Siegel with lyrics by Bernd Meinunger. In 1980, the group’s song, “Moscow”, topped the Australian charts and remained #1 for six weeks. While the group broke up in the mid-1980s, the German video for “Moskau” was a part of the show Disco on ZDF; as was their similarly staged number “Dschinghis Khan”.

7 Badass Bavarian Foods You Must Try
Bavarian food doesn’t mess around.
Bavarian food is the guy at the gym in the tiny muscle tee who’s lifting weights so heavy, the veins in his neck and head (and other parts of the body that you didn’t even know HAD veins) start to pop out.
Bavaria‘s cuisine is a monster truck. It crumples the delicate-by-comparison culinary offerings of Spain, Italy, and France like tiny little Fiats and Peugots in its path.
Do you want to eat Bavarian food? OF COURSE YOU DO. It is rich and doughy and filling and is the only thing on the planet that can soak up German beer. Every other fare will simply hide in the corner of your stomach, petrified at the sheer awesomeness of the brew that resides in there with it, and it will never get digested.
In short: if you don’t eat Bavarian food while in Germany, you could die. Here are some of my favorites. They will turn your tastebuds into receptors of SHEER ECSTASY.

Bernd das Brot

Bernd das Brot (English: Bernd the bread) is a puppet character, star mascot and cult figure of the German children’s television channel KI.KA currently featured in the programs Bernd das Brot, Bravo Bernd and the KI.KA late night loop program.

Bernd das Brot – Kika sucht das Superbrot
Fußball Song
Bernd is a depressed, grumpy, curmudgeonly, constantly bad-tempered, surly, fatalistic, melancholic loaf of pullman bread speaking in a deep, gloomy baritone. He is small, square-shaped and golden brown with hands directly attached to his body, eyes circles and a thin-lipped mouth. According to himself, he belongs to the species “Homo Brotus Depressivus”.
According to the official version, the short-armed bread character made its first appearance as part of an advertising campaign for a bakery chain. When the campaign turned out unsuccessful, Bernd was forced to apply for job at the KI.KA, which is also the reason for his permanent scowl.
Bernd sympathizes firstly with himself. Bernd actually does not want to appear on television and thinks it is a “dirty business”.
His favourite activities include staring at his south wall at home, learning the pattern of his woodchip wallpaper by heart, reading his favourite magazine The Desert and You, and enlarging his collection of the most boring railway tracks on video.
His favorite expression is Mist!, used in much the same way as the English “crap” or “Damn it!”. His other favorite sentences are: “I would like to be left alone,” “I would like to leave this show,” and “My life is hell.”
Bernd interacts with two co-main characters. One is the chatty Chili das Schaf (Chili the Sheep), a female, yellow sheep with flaming red hair. Chili, the show’s Gastgeberin (hostess), is a Stuntschaf (stuntsheep) who finds it exciting to have close calls with accidents. The other main character is the show’s technical expert, the always pleasant Briegel der Busch (Briegel the Bush), a green, bespectacled bush with flowers and leaves in lieu of hair. Briegel is an inventor who loves to build complicated devices that almost inevitably explode of their own accord – these devices are usually what is sold on the show. In contrast to Bernd, they enjoy adventures and the excitement of life.
Bernd doesn’t hide that he doesn’t think very highly of his colleagues, refusing to call them by name while they treat him as their best friend, even give him nicknames such as “Bernti”.
The first show starring Bernd, Chili and Briegel was the 2001 pastiche Tolle Sachen, die einzige Werbesendung auf KI.KA (English: Great things, the only advertising show on KI.KA) (KI.KA is actually a public, commercial-free channel). In this show Chili and Briegel would advertise an object that would be tested by a “randomly” chosen tester that would invariably turn out to be Bernd. Shows with Bernd, Chili and Briegel also include pastiches of Robin Hood, Star Trek, Western and fairy tales.

Multi-Copter

World’s first manned flight with an electric multicopter (HD 720p)
A group of German tinkerers have successfully completed what it claims is the world’s first manned flight with an electric-powered “multi-copter” — a contraption that resembles a helicopter but with 16 rotors.
The one-minute-and-30-second flight was proof of concept for the machine that could one day find use for tasks such as inspecting wind turbines and pipelines or taking aerial photographs — in addition to giving aviation geeks a good time.
Though most similar to a helicopter, the team says the E-volo is superior due to the “simplicity of its engineered construction without complicated mechanics, and its redundant engines.”
Should something go wrong, it can land even if four of its 16 rotors fail, for example. And since there is no propeller above the pilot, a safety parachute could also be deployed.
Sans pilot, the machine weighs 176 pounds (80 kilograms), light enough to be classified as an ultralight.
What makes it different from other helicopter-like flying machines with multiple rotors is the electric power source — lithium-ion batteries. In its current configuration, there’s enough juice for 20 minutes of flight.
We’ve recently seen other electric flying machines, such as the electric-powered plane that took flight this summer at EAA AirVenture show in Wisconsin. And students at the University of Maryland are working on a human-powered helicopter.
Compared to flying a plane, the E-volo is simple to operate — it is controlled with a joystick — potentially opening up this aviation thrill to the masses.
Future designs could include multi-seat machines that zip along quickly enough to replace the helicopters we see flying around today.

This Is Halloween (German) Lyrics/Subtitles on screen!
Der große Kürbis/The Great Pumpkin-Charlie Brown
It’s not really a traditional German celebration, but in recent years Halloween has become increasingly popular in Europe. It is now common to see pumpkin (Kürbis) and jack-o’lantern decorations in Austria and Germany in late October. Probably as a result of Halloween depictions in Hollywood movies and on television, Halloween has become a popular celebration for children and adults in German Europe. It’s an American holiday exported from Ireland and now imported back into Europe. The Mardi Gras/Fasching/Karneval aspects of Halloween also have a special appeal to Europeans.
Halloween in Germany
German kids don’t usually go trick-or-treating, but Halloween has become a very “cool” party theme for young and old. A Web search in German will turn up many German-language Halloween sites-many of them for party outfitters. More and more German department stores carry Halloween-related items in October. Hamburg’s House of Horror specialty store, which opened for business in 1996, does a brisk business around Halloween.
The Austrian town of Retz, not far from Vienna, holds an annual Halloween festival, complete with pumpkins, parties, and a Halloween-Umzug (“Halloween parade”). The region around Retz has also become known for its annual pumpkin harvest.
There is an old traditional German custom that has much in common with Halloween: Martinstag. The observance of Martinstag (Nov. 11) includes costumes and a lantern procession for children.
The Candy Corn Connection
There is at least one direct German-American Halloween connection. Following the American Civil War, Gustav and Albert Goelitz traveled to Illinois to join an uncle who had emigrated in 1834. After Gustav’s death, his two eldest sons revived the candy business that he and Albert had founded. The story goes that the Goelitz Confectionery Co. invented the popular Halloween confection known as candy corn in the 1880s. Records indicate that Goelitz was making candy corn by 1900. That firm’s successor, today’s Herman Goelitz, Inc. of Fairfield, California, is best known as the maker of Jelly Belly jelly bean candy.

German Christmas: Culinary Delights
When it gets dark early in the afternoon, and a frosty wind is blowing outside, Christmas can’t be far away. During the four weeks before Christmas, Germans celebrate “Advent” with festive candles, caroling and lots and lots of freshly baked holiday cookies and cakes such as Stollen from Dresden, Gingerbread from Nuremberg, and cinnamon stars. There are plenty of easy and some not so easy-to-make dishes traditionally served during the holiday season in Germany. A very easy one is Germany’s favorite Christmas drink:
Recipe for mulled wine
Ingredients:
1 large bottle of dry red wine
1 lemon
2 – 3 cinnamon sticks
10 cloves
3 tbsp sugar
1 – 2 tbsp cardamom seeds to season
To prepare: Heat the red wine. Slice the lemon and add to the hot red wine together with the cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and sugar. Heat for approx. 5 mins. then remove from the heat. Do not boil! Cover and allow to infuse for approx. 1 hour. Reheat and strain before serving.

COERLL ANNOUNCES GERMAN LANGUAGE
AUSTIN, TX – October 5, 2011 – The Center for Open Educational Resources & Language Learning (COERLL), a national foreign language resource center specializing in learning materials that are freely available for the Internet public, has released an upgraded version of Deutsch im Blick (DiB), an Internet-based multimedia German textbook.
The new Deutsch im Blick has been retrofitted to meet the expectations of a high-quality Open Educational Resource (OER) in foreign language education.
To access the interactive textbook, go to http://coerll.utexas.edu/dib/
New features include:
* An easy print-on-demand option for the textbook.
* Compatibility with smart phones and camera-enabled devices to play video and audio.
* Video clips that can be shared through Facebook, Twitter, email, or personal websites.
* A web page of interactive and customizable professional development resources.
* A Creative Commons license, which allows users to access, adapt, and share the materials.
Deutsch im Blick features QR codes that link directly to the audio and video on the website and can be easily accessed on smartphones and other camera phones.
“Deutsch im Blick is a great example of how open textbooks allow you to break with tradition,” said Carl Blyth, COERLL Director. “For example, most language textbooks focus exclusively on the native speaker. Unlike the majority of German textbooks, Deutsch im Blick presents German language and culture as well as the learner experience. In other words, Deutsch im Blick shows the learner interacting with the native speaker in the context of a study abroad program in Wurzburg, Germany.”
The original resource, launched in 2008, included a comprehensive10-chapter textbook accessed online, over 300 video clips of native speakers and students, audio samples of language use, and grammar study. The Deutsch im Blick textbook project was sponsored by two FIPSE grants promoting open access learning and collaborative publishing.

Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Many aspects of Eugen Ruge’s prizewinning novel are autobiographical
Until recently, author and translator Eugen Ruge was all but unknown in Germany. But his autobiographical story of an East German family’s experiences across 40 years won him the top literary awar
d.
Author Eugen Ruge’s years of work on his family saga “In Zeiten des abnehmenden Lichts” (English: “In Times of Fading Light”) garnered him the 2011 German Book Prize, awarded Monday evening.
The novel is the 57-year-old’s debut and treats “the experiences of four generations across 50 years in a dramatic, refined composition,” wrote the book prize jury, adding that the book examines “socialist utopia, the price it exacts on the individual and its gradual disappearance.”
The jury also praised the novel for being engaging and full of humor as it traces the story of a family. The grandparents are staunch communists, the parents are victims of Stalinism, and the son is a frustrated GDR citizen who flees to West Germany.
Three generations of suffering
The storyline begins in 1952 in Mexico, where the committed Stalinists, Charlotte and Wilhelm, a in exile. Both come from working class families, and it was the communist party that first offered them recognition and the ability to let their talents unfold. Even though their own sons fell victim to Stalinist purges in the Soviet Union, the couple prefers to overlook the fact that the party also demands iron discipline and sends the disobedient off to gulags.
One son, Kurt, survives and moves with his Russian wife Irina to East Germany, steadfastly refusing to discuss his experiences in the gulag. He adapts to his new life but also turns inward and avoids participating in party affairs as much as possible. His son Alexander grows up between two conflicting worlds: the silence of his father on the one hand and the socialism of Charlotte and Wilhelm on the other. His mother holds the family together while dissolving her frustrations in alcohol.
Seven perspectives
Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: An English version of the novel is plannedThe novel takes place partly in 2001. Alexander travels to Mexico to trace the footsteps of his grandparents who survived the Nazi era by living in exile there. Alexander’s travels frame the story as it reaches back and incorporates details from the family’s history to 1952. Another focal point is the 90th birthday of family patriarch, Wilhelm, in October, 1989, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
As the temporal perspective shifts throughout the novel, so does the narrator. Each of the family members takes over the narrative at different points, offering their own perspectives on the story. But the central figure remains Alexander, arguably the author’s own alter ego.
Long time coming
Eugen Ruge tells exacting, unembellished stories that could only have come from the GDR. “In Zeiten des abnehmenden Lichts” is indeed the author’s first novel, but he’s no newcomer to the literary scene. For years, Ruge has written radio dramas, screenplays, theater works and translated Russian texts. In 2009, he won the Alfred Döblin Prize for parts of the now-complete work.
Manches verging, was einstmals Staub gemacht.
Berlin, Berlin, Du bist mein Publikum.

Wikipedia – France Gall
France Gall is a French yé-yé singer, born in Paris on 9 October 1947. France has had a very prolific music career, having released 11 studio albums. A French counterpart to Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera, she produced feel-good pop hits that mainly appealed to European teenage audiences from the early ’60s through to the late eighties. It was the collaboration with her husband Michel Berger that really rocketed Gall the height of fame. The winning duo’s success ended with Berger’s death in 1992, but Gall continued to forge a name for herself, and kept the memory of her late husband alive in subsequent tributes and charity work.

Franz Peter Schubert
(31 Jan 1797 – 19 Nov 1828) Austrian composer.
Although he died at an early age, Schubert was tremendously prolific. He wrote some 600 Lieder, nine symphonies (including the famous “Unfinished Symphony”), liturgical music, operas, some incidental music, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. Appreciation of his music during his lifetime was limited, but interest in Schubert’s work increased dramatically in the decades following his death at the age of 31. Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn, among others, discovered and championed his works in the 19th Century. Today, Schubert is admired as one of the leading exponents of the early Romantic era in music and he remains one of the most frequently performed composers.
