Literary Responses to War

Fortunate Son

This song by Creedence Clearwater epitomizes the images of the Vietnam War for me. As someone who was born after the time of this war and therefore can only rely on media stories and images of it to form opinions, this song is the first thing that pops into my mind when someone mentions the Vietnam War. I know this sounds cliche’, but the images from Forrest Gump with this song playing in the background are really what I think of.
This song really embodies the feelings of the “average man” who faced being drafted and going to serve his country in a war he probably did not understand or agree with, while more priveleged men managed to escape the draft. While being “anti-war”, this song does not degrade the men fighting for their country, and many argue that it hails them for being the ones who are defending their nation.
