American Literature – Response to War
September 6th, 2010
I decided to use video clips as my Reponse to War. I am a big fan of ”So You Think You Can Dance.” The first clip is of a married couples struggling with letting eachother go due to the war. The spouse doesnt want to leave, and at the end they even throw in a twist. The song that they are dancing to has powerful lyrics saying: “When the light falls down, I wait for you to come around.” So many people and couple struggle with their loved ones leaving, and the thought of them never returning has got to be something terrible.

I also chose another dance from this season of the show. Its entitled “Mad World.” My grandfather was in the vietnam war, and he has told me so many stories. The ones I think that affected me the most, were of life after the war. In all reality, when the soldiers came home, they were not greeted with affection and warmth. That war was not even considered to be won, and the techniques that they used in that war were ones they were not used to. There were not jobs waiting for them, many became homeless, some lost their minds, their physical being, became addicts, beggars, and were treated as if they were not american heroes. The lyrics to the song are speaking about a familiar world, but in a sense its one to which he does not belong in anymore. I think this video relates to the first because it shows life after war. And sometimes, its not always as joyous as people think. Unfortunatley, due to copyright policies, the videos cant be embedded, but I have provided the links. So hopefully you all enjoy them.
