Supplemental Information

Here are some interesting links to supplement the films we watched in class.

In 2005, more than 30 years after the Watergate scandal, the identity of “Deep Throat,” the informant who helped Woodward and Bernstein break the case, was finally revealed. You can read about it here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/31/AR2005053100655.html

One of the most tragic characters in Flags of our Fathers is Ira Hayes, the Native American Indian soldier whose sacrifice in war was met at home with prejudice and bigotry. Hayes was later immortalized in a song, “The Ballad of Ira Hayes,” which was performed by Bob Dylan and has since been covered by Johnny Cash and many other artists. Click here for the lyrics to the ballad. Or, you may prefer to listen to the song. Here is a link to the song on you tube.

Welcome to English 1302!

This course blog serves multiple purposes, the first of which is to provide you with 24-hour online access to course materials like assignment sheets and syllabi. Access of this type eliminates the problem of lost copies and protects the environment. In addition to serving as a tool for instructors to communicate with students, blogging provides you with a way to ask questions, to play with ideas, to practice argumentation, and to receive feedback from readers in an informal, non-threatening environment. Conversations held on the blog not only extend the time we can spend in scholarly debate, but can also provide writing practice that can greatly improve the arguments you make in your major papers this semester!

  1. Please remember that updates to the syllabus / changes in the assignment schedule will be made on the blog. It is important for you to check the blog regularly.
  2. If you comment or leave questions on the blog, please be respectful of one another in your comments.
  3. Please ask confidential questions over email, not on the blog.
  4. When you post a comment, you will be asked to give your name. Please include your name in a form that will be recognizable to your instructor (first name and last initial or first initial and last name would be fine).

Thanks for your cooperation! It is going to be a great semester!
