Creole People

Something in the book that I wanted to learn more about was what creole meant and who they were. The term creole has a lot of different meanings but in the case of the novella “The Awakening” Kate Chopin refers to the New Orleans Creole people. These people are a mixture of Spanish and French descent. They were also considered free people of color at a time in the south when slavery was prominent.

According to the context and culture lesson the creole people were at first considered to be only those of French descent and the Spanish was not thought of as anything but adding to the landscape of Louisiana. However, after a while both the French and the Spanish began to make New Orleans their home and naturally over time they would get together and have children and then became a new type of definition for creole people as stated above.

In the story we read that Mrs Pontellier is surrounded by the creole people at the place she is at. It is stated that she is not used to being around them or their culture but it does say that she finds them attractive. It seems to me that Mr. Pontellier is a creole.

Response to war

This is a song by christian artist Mark Schultz called “Letters From War”. This song is a very sentimental song and one that touches all who hear it. The story is about the correspondence between a mother who is in the states and her son who is in the military. This song and the video that goes along with it shows what it is like from both points of view when you are in the military or if you have relatives that are in the military. For the mother it shows how much she misses her son and how writing is a way not only to communicate but also therapy for her as she continued to write even though it seemed like that he may not be alive anymore. For the son is was a way of communication and therapy to be able to think about being home and seeing his family again which by the end of the video/song he finally does. This is something that military families can relate to and it is a touching story as well.
