IIE Student Chapter wins GOLD again!

The UT Arlington Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) has been awarded the GOLD Student Chapter Recognition award for the chapter’s improvements, progress,and overall achievements in 2014-2015.

The faculty advisor, Dr. Jamie Rogers, said that the group has won many of the IIE GOLD awards before and continues to strive to maintain that standard.

This is the highest award given to student chapters and gives UT Arlington public recognition and visibility. The award is determined by a point system measuring improvement trends and progress tracking.

Dr. Rogers Receives IIE Fellow Award

Dr. Jamie RogersJamie Rogers, Ph.D., P.E. recently received the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Fellow Award which was presented to her during the IIE Annual Conference & Expo 2014, held May 31 – June 3 at the Palais des Congrés de Montréal. This award recognizes outstanding leaders of the profession who have made significant, nationally recognized contributions to industrial engineering. A fellow is the highest classification of IIE membership.

Dr. Rogers is a Professor and Associate Chair for the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington. She  has won several teaching awards such as the University of Texas System Regents’ Outstanding Teacher (2012) and the UTA Chancellor’s Council Award for Teaching Excellence (1999). In 2013, she was inducted into the University of Missouri Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Hall of Fame and was nominated for the prestigious Piper Professor. In 2011, she was inducted into the UT Arlington Academy of Distinguished Teachers.

In addition to her excellence in teaching, she  has contributed to the improvement of the IE Program in schools across the nation. She is the 2014-2015 President of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) and has served as a volunteer for many years. She is also the Faculty Advisor for the Gold Award winning UT Arlington Student Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. She is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, AAUW, Tau Beta Pi, Alpha Pi Mu, Omega Rho, Omicron Delta Kappa, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, SWE, and Order of the Engineer.  Dr. Rogers was responsible for the creation of the M.S. Logistics Program at UT Arlington, an innovative joint program with the College of Business and College of Engineering, approved by the UT System Board of Regents in 1999 and she served as Graduate Advisor from 1999-2013.

Dr. Rogers received her B.S. in Industrial Engineering from The University of Missouri at Columbia, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering from UT Arlington.

Dr. Rogers Seeking Input for NSF Workshop

Hi everyone,

I am writing to share good news and request input for my upcoming NSF Workshop 3/16-3/21/2014.

Background:

The Directorate for Education and Human Resources has implemented a new program for “Improving Undergraduate STEM Education” (IUSE) through its Division of Undergraduate Education (EHR/DUE). An “Ideas Lab” is a new merit review strategy being used at the National Science Foundation to address grand challenges in STEM research and education. The Ideas Lab process is modeled on the “IDEAS Factory” program [2] http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/routes/network/ideas/Pages/experience.aspx developed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the United Kingdom.  The Ideas Lab process starts with submission of a brief application to participate in the Ideas Lab, indicating a Principal Investigator’s interest in and preliminary ideas regarding the specific Ideas Lab topic.  A diverse sub-set of participants from a range of disciplines and backgrounds will be selected from the submitted applications by NSF and will be brought together in an intensive, interactive and free-thinking environment, where participants immerse themselves in a collaborative dialog in order to construct bold and innovative approaches.

I have been selected to participate in the workshop below and would like your input. Please provide your answer to 1) Why did you choose engineering? 2) How can we get more folks (as described below) to choose engineering? What new strategies could be used????

Engineering

Social inequality in engineering education and practice is a durable problem, one that has resisted perennial efforts to “broaden participation,” “increase diversity,” or “improve recruitment and retention of women, minorities, and people with disabilities.” While a great deal of previous and ongoing work has focused on fostering the ability of individuals to access and persist in the engineering education system, this Ideas Lab will focus on changing the system itself.

Ending inequality in engineering is crucial because it represents a direct and effective way to meet workforce needs; because members of marginalized groups should not be on the sidelines in shaping our infrastructure and technological future; because workforce diversity strengthens work product; and because increased participation in high paying, prestigious workforce sectors like engineering is itself a strategy for achieving greater equity.

Many prior efforts for inclusion have been hampered by a presumption that certain parameters can’t be changed (for example, eligibility criteria, narrow definitions of what counts in or as engineering, limited roles for 2-year institutions, or a four year degree model). This ends in disappointment and frustration when change is not achieved. A radical rethinking is needed to move forward.

In the Engineering Phase I Ideas Lab, engineers and social scientists will face head on the systems and structures that reproduce social inequality in engineering education and in the engineering workforce. A complete and direct discussion is not afraid to examine manifestations of racism, sexism, and ableism in engineering, and to also consider classism, heteronormativity, ageism, and obstacles faced by Veterans and other non-traditional groups. The Engineering Phase I Ideas Lab will generate new framings and new strategies to move the nation toward greater inclusion of marginalized groups in engineering.

Dr. Jamie Rogers Elected President of ABET

Dr. Jamie RogersThe Board of Directors at the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) has elected Dr. Jamie Rogers for president. ABET is a “nonprofit, non-governmental organization that accredits college and university programs in the disciplines of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.” ABET accreditation assures that the university’s program meets the standards of quality established by the profession in the various fields of study. The IMSE Department is ABET accredited.

Dr. Rogers has been active in ABET, serving on he Board of Directors, International Activities Council, and Engineering Accreditation Commission. In addition to her election, she has been nominated for IIE Fellow and the prestigious Piper Professor Award. In 2011, she was inducted into the UTA Academy of Distinguished Teachers. She also received the UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teacher Award in recognition of her teaching excellence in 2012.

Dr. Jamie Rogers is a professor and the Associate Chair of the IMSE Department at UT Arlington.  She  also serves as the faculty advisor for the industrial engineering professional student organization, IIE.

This year is off to a great start for Dr. Jamie Rogers – in addition to becoming  Full Professor, she has just been elected ABET President-Elect (www.abet.org). In addition, she has been nominated for IIE Fellow and the prestigious Piper Professor Award. Very exciting – stay tuned!
