What should each IT personnel do to help create a better IT organization?

Open and Honest Communication:
Communication is a fundamental principle that can determine how successful we are at supporting the University. Creating an open environment with honest communication will lead to reduced stress, team building, as well as mutual respect throughout the organization.

Prioritize and Focus:
Do not work on several projects at one time. Have you ever heard the phrase “a master of all is a master of none?” By focusing our attention on a few projects, we can increase the quality of our work and start checking off critical projects that are requested by the University. Focus your attention on the strategic projects that presents the most value to our customers.

Listen and Be Present:
Actively listen to your customers and understand what they want and value the most. We cannot support the University if we do not understand the initial request.

Consider the Impact:
Always think about your customer and how the situation will impact them. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. How can the IT organization reduce the potential impact to our customers and the University as a whole?

Representing IT and the University
Everyone is a representative and salesperson for IT. Your actions are a direct reflection of the IT organization and affects the overall view. Sometimes, representing IT means helping a student find their way around the University or directing people to the proper department or person to answer questions about enrolling as a student.

Be Respectful
Always be respectful to our customers, colleagues, and peers.

Strengthen and Maintain Internal and External Relationships
According to foxbusiness.com, “…Your relationship with a customer is only as good as your last interaction.” Make a point to treat each interaction like it is the first. It only takes one bad interaction to destroy credibility, reputation, and positive perceptions. Building stronger relationships internally and throughout the campus can help us understand how we can support the faculty, staff, and students.
